My spring semester of 2020 I was a graphic design intern for the Iowa State Study Abroad Center. The work I did for them mainly consisted of maintaining the materials that the distribute every year. Being that it was for a college program, I had a lot of opportunities to work with print media which I appreciated greatly. They also had resources like unlimited Shutterstock downloads whichI made sure to take full advantage of. I’d like to give a huge shout out to the Study Abroad Center at Iowa State for all of the awesome things that they do!
One of my favorite projects that I had the opportunity to work on was the Northern and Central Europe brochure redesign. Due to the ever-changing nature of these programs this design had to be adaptable for years to come which is why I wanted to go with a modular layout. This layout allows for different programs and countries to be placed into these sections and all of the information will still make sense even if the locations change. The heavy use of photographic elements was something that I used to quite literally show what these programs are like. I went through a few different ideas within this modular layout idea before landing on this final design and I was thrilled with the final product!
Another project that I put together for the Study Abroad Center was this poster design for the Semester in Caceres program. Caceres, for those who don’t know, is a city in the western part of Spain near Portugal. A big portion of my design process for this project was figuring out what information was to be included on the actual poster. Sifting through countless old versions and communicating with the program directors meant that I was making small tweaks and revisions almost every day. And with that in mind I put together this layout. The type and image is easily editable and it takes a lot of new content to break up my grid layout.
One thing that I did not anticipate I would learn during this design process is how fun it is to type “Caceres” with one hand. I’m really good at it now.
